Senior Health

My best friend once said that an older person's body is like an old boat, just when you are done patching up one leak, you find another. I wish he wasn't right... So, on the topic of "leaks", figuratively and literally, did you know that a condition can have multiple causes? For example, incontinence (I said we were sticking to leaks) can be caused by a. muscles weakening, b. hydrocephalus, c. the brain deteriorating, or d. all of the above. And even if you try to treat d, you might not remedy the problem. As a caregiver that is putting so much into managing an elderly loved one's health, the inefficiency can be devastating. To add to the complexity, bodily systems are more interconnected than you might think...the brain can affect vision, a heart condition can make a UTI deadly, hearing loss can be connected to dementia...it's fascinating and overwhelming. So, I'm outlining as many tidbits as I can on this eldercare health journey, because I've learned that being an informed advocate for your elderly parent can make a positive difference in your loved one's care.
